Sad News - Passing of Geoff Hancock
John Bowness on Geoff -
At the recent Leicester League Annual Meeting the first thing learned was that Geoff Hancock, one of its longest serving players, had passed away after a relatively short illness. He was still playing league matches in March of this year.
Geoff started his table tennis life at Outlook Boys Club in the 1960s under the leadership of the indefatigable Dave Bowman who started many a lad along the same road to very good effect before eventually moving to France to live with his French born wife.
Geoff played in the very first years of the Elbow Tankard, a team handicap held during the summer months, and has always been well suited to handicap events, playing in latter years with Abbots Road and, in the end, with Electricity alongside Chalky White from the same era who is still playing.
Chris Parmar-Saville on Geoff -
It was sad to hear of the passing of Geoff. I always enjoyed some tough games against Geoff and some chat after the game. He had a unique style and character, often playing away from table with the ability to come in and drive a backhand winner. He was also known at the Billesdon Table Tennis group I am part of and would come from time to time to play.
