It never fails to amaze me the diverse ages many sports have from the very young to getting on a bit. Naturally there are those with natural upper bands although even those are sometimes surprising. Athletics I would feel is one and then you find 90-year-olds running marathons.
However, I cannot imagine any other sport has a wider band than table tennis. When you consider the World Age Championships where the occasional 100-year-old turns up, and then the Chinese who begin their coaching with children aged four. A difference of 96 years.
Which brings me to my lead for this week’s Mercury copy mentioning 86-year-old Rod Pickering facing 85-year-old Roger Newby in Division Five. Among Rod’s achievements, admittedly just a few years ago, was winning the County Singles title and perhaps that gave him the edge (no pun intended) to tip-toe home 12-10, 14-12, 12-10. But what an advertisement for our sport.
